Britannia, The

This early example Zag-Zaw features a fine maritime study of the King's yacht Britannia, painted by the British artist Ernest Stuart.
The Whimsies, or figural shaped pieces are very reminiscent of the shapes found in the W.G. Evans branded puzzles which were possibly also cut by Raphael Tuck & Sons.
The magnificent racing yacht Britannia was built in 1893 for the then Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII and won 231 races in her long and distinguished career, taking part in her last race at Cowes in 1935. She was scuppered off the Isle of Wight in 1936 following King George V's dying wish for his beloved yacht to follow him to the grave.
