Gold and Russet

Wonderful example from the earlier years of Britain's best known manufacturer, which features a fine autumnal scene of two working horses, namely Gold and Russet, painted by the distinguished British equine artist Lucy Kemp-Welch (1869-1958), best known for her illustrations of the 1915 edition of Anna Sewell's Black Beauty.
Thick plywood, top-class hinge-lidded boxes and fine figural shapes helped to distinguish these top quality puzzles, forerunners to the hugely popular Gold Box puzzles.
