Thorburn's Birds

This series of wooden jigsaw puzzles, initially six in number was introduced by Wentworth around 1998, with each puzzle depicting a family of British birds. They were offered in various sizes with 250-piece versions being the most common. More were added later and all remain very popular today.

There may be other puzzles in addition to those illustrated. Wentworth assigned catalogue numbers to some subjects but these do not appear on the boxes.

The artwork is published © George Rainbird/Robert Harding and features superb paintings by the British wildlife artist Archibald Thorburn 1860-1935. The puzzle boxes also included a double-sided sheet detailing the work of the artist and the first six titles in the series, see example illustrated.
It is just possible to make out the individual Plate Numbers and the names of the species depicted.

David Shearer comments: "My first example, that of The Titmouse Family proved immensely enjoyable, far more challenging than most of the other Wentworth puzzles I have attempted. They also included a fine selection of predominantly avian-themed Whimsies".
