London-The Bastion of Liberty
Very limited production 5-ply wooden jigsaw puzzle from Chad Valley, believed to be of approximately 1950 production. The cutting style is fully interlocking and includes colour line-cutting around the two main title/quotation plaques. The colourful artwork is one of the pictorial maps drawn and painted by the British illustrator and poster artist Kerry Lee (1903-1988).
The map includes pictorial representations of numerous famous buildings, along with many historical references and is surrounded by small vignettes featuring many of London's most familiar regions and landmarks. The artist has also included a depiction of himself and a signed easel, with his faithful dog Jim at his side (lower right corner of map section).
This puzzle came housed in a very sturdy plain red box, with no identification labels, much the same as this
City of Birmingham puzzle, believed to have been from a similar date.
The partial label on the base of the box can be identified as one of Chad Valley's labels from this era. See this other
Chad Valley puzzle box for confirmation.
