Milky Way to Health, The (Version 2)
This is only the second example I have witnessed of this, extremely uncommon, promotional cardboard puzzle, marketed by Chad Valley in the mid-1930's to promote the Allenbury's Foods for Infants range, manufactured by the British Pharmaceutical firm of Allen & Hanbury, and entitled The Milky Way to Health.
This puzzle differs in several key areas to the other example, here denoted as
Version 1, most notably being the slightly different scene depicted, with this version including an additional group of children just to the right of centre. As well as this, the full-sized colour guide picture from Version 1, has been replaced in this example with a much smaller double-sided cardboard one which, like the other does not feature the extra group. All very strange!
It should also be noted that the printer for this version was W & G Baird Ltd., London & Belfast, a company still thriving today, whose name appears in white print along the lower right corner of the puzzle, whilst in the other version, the printers name is illegible, but printed in blue ink, possibly indicating two or more production runs for this puzzle. In both cases the box appears identical.
The artist for the poster was the brilliant British illustrator Gladys Peto (1890-1977)
