Untitled-Young Child with Book
This is my first encounter with a Combridge's branded jigsaw puzzle and very fortuitously, it contained a detailed price list with many important details about them. See literature section for the full text.
By examining the cutting style, particularly the Whimsies, or figural shaped pieces and also looking at the titles and sizes available, it it clear that they were being supplied with their puzzles by the London-based firm of The Zig-Zag Puzzle Company, one of Britain's main manufacturers in the early part of the 20th century. The Combridge's price list was issued in 1916 and many titles offered mirrored those listed in this
1915 leaflet from the Zig-Zag Company. In both instances, the ongoing Great War featured heavily in their available range.
The label of this puzzle is too badly faded to decipher the proper title and I have not been able to identify it from the list of 150 piece titles on the price list, nor is the artist signature legible.
