Glorious June

Magnificent wooden jigsaw with over 1000 pieces, cut in a very challenging push-fit style and including 45 whimsies, or figural shapes, most of which have been further cut to form composite whimsies, one notable exception being the swallow shape in the lower-left grass area.
The title Glorious June, seems somewhat inapt for this very Autumnal scene.
Many thanks to Nicki Barker for supplying photographs and details on this superb puzzle.
Update December 2010 Recent sightings of several puzzles in boxes attributable to W.G. Evans & Sons., have served to convince both Nicki & myself that this is also produced by them. The almost identical star, flag, sword and horse-head appeared in the former examples, although this is the only one so far seen with the whimsies themselves cut into smaller pieces. This is probably a technique only employed in the largest examples!
