Dogs

Colourful semi-interlocking plywood puzzle, cut in a style often associated with this brand. The process involved dissecting the board with several elongated cuts prior to cutting these lengthy sections into the individual pieces. The puzzle is thought to be of c1920s manufacture. The "subject" entry on the box end label is very faint but appears to simply read "Dogs" as the title.

I have shown a picture of the reverse side, along with an edited version highlighting the various cuts, in colour, to try and demonstrate the method. See the red, blue and yellow lines which identify the five sections created after making the initial vertical cut line, highlighted in green. The white lines represent the secondary cuts made to produce the individual pieces.

The box base carries a stamped label for the store "Evans and Owen Ltd., Bath", the city's first department store, established in 1880.
