Good Companion

Hugely popular brand of British puzzles, produced over a lengthy period and in several size and box formats.

I believe that the earliest examples were those of the 160+ piece design, understood to have been produced shortly after WW11 and exclusive to F.W. Woolworth & Co., Ltd., as advised by the checker's label enclosed in the box. See this example, from the puzzle "Builders"

The most extensive production was that of their 400+ piece variants. These started with artistic studies, mostly of a topical nature but over the forthcoming decades, moved to more widespread subject matter and increasingly used photographic images.

Special thanks to Cliff Maddock, who has built up an almost complete set of the 400+ piece puzzles, and from whose collection many of these images have been gathered.
