Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest
This is a most unusual example of solid wooden jigsaw puzzle by top-London manufacturer Holtzapffel. The puzzle features on the front page of the company's
pre 1922 price list, although I consider this example to have come from very early on in this period, probably pre WWI and in the era 1910-1914. Whilst this huge puzzle features a vast amount of colour line-cutting which helped to make it one of the most challenging of puzzles to assemble, the cutting style is far more angular in its nature than any other examples I have seen. The original box is missing, but the puzzle does include its checkers label to confirm its Holtzapffel identity.
The artist of this wonderful study of England's folklore hero has not been identified, although the print carries copyright information along the lower edge which reads Copyright 1909 by Franz Hanfstaengl. Whilst he was an artist in his own right, I believe that the copyright refers to the published print, the price list also quoting the Pall Mall address of his Art Publishing business.
This was another case involving some major, but very deserving, restoration work, the puzzle having been missing 12 of its original pieces!Artist: Unidentified
