South African Series, The

A quite superb series of puzzles, cut in varying sizes and featuring a wide range of subject material. The boxes promote Artistic Reproductions in fine colours of Picturesque Scenes in South Africa and Mountains, Waterfalls, Wild Nature, Sea views, Sport and Social Life. Also advertised as Springbok Series.
The series expanded considerably throughout its production run, believed to have started in the late 1920's and continuing in to the late 1930's. Most, but not all, have a list of available titles on the box-base and this is perhaps the best indicator of a puzzle's individual age, with those listing the smallest number of titles representing the earliest examples. The majority of the paintings are by the British artist Charles Eddowes Turner (1883-1965), whose work appears extensively within puzzles from this era. Examples include those within this series, along with examples from the AVN Jones "Australian" series and others from Chad Valley's "Dunlop" and "Cunard" series.
Here are those within the Jigasaurus which are attributed to him, but there are undoubtedly others where his signature is missing, preventing certainty.

Puzzles of twenty three of the listed subjects are illustrated, the others being:-
09 – The Cango Caves: Oudtshoorn
14 - Surf or Smooth Water: The Ocean Beach at Durban
15 - Seeing the Beauties of Durban by Ricksha
17 - The Colenso of the Boer War-Then and Now
18 - The Observation Car of a Train-de-luxe
21 - The Country Club, Johannesburg
26 - Golf in the "Garden Colony" of South Africa
28 – (not issued)
31 - With the Rand Hunt, Johannesburg
33 - A New Year's Dance at the 12 o'clock Club, Johannesburg
