11. Native Workers at a Rand Gold Mine, (150 pieces)

This 150 piece puzzle is assumed to date from the early days of this popular series, as it is cut from solid wood rather than the usual plywood. The titles list on the box-base also only lists up to number 12, this example being number 11. The picture in this smaller version has been truncated and is missing the artist's signature.

The painting is by the artist John Henry Amshewitz (1882-1942), born in England, but who resided and worked in South Africa for a part of his working life c1916-1922 and 1936 onwards until his death in Muizenberg.

The box label features the guide image for number 10, The Lions Den. This practice occurred in several other instances, perhaps as a cost-saving exercise.

This puzzle disappeared from the series listings quite early on, perhaps an indication of poor sales or possibly for reasons of a more political nature.
