Comets

Very challenging non-interlocking plywood jigsaw puzzle, cut by Eric Bond and entering the library stocks in 1950, some two years prior to the plane which the artwork portrays, that of the de Havilland Comet.
In the superbly detailed painting by British artist Terence Cuneo, we see at least four Comets under construction at the company's Hatfield aerodrome, in Hertfordshire. The painting is signed and date July 1949, the first flight of the prototype DH. 106 Comet having taken place on 27th July 1949. It seems highly likely then that this artwork was commissioned to celebrate that event.
