Autumn in Arizona

300 piece push-fit plywood jigsaw puzzle, cut in 1960 by Dolly McDougall and using a colourful but unsigned autumnal scene as its subject.

The puzzle has been cut with some colour line-cutting but its more interesting characteristic is the inclusion of several patterns within. These are most notable in the lower left corner and along the lower edge, where seven somewhat oak-leaf shapes have been cut in, each split into two halves. These are very similar to those included in another of her 1960 cut puzzles, that of Lady with Parasol. As both puzzles feature this in rather bland parts of the image it was perhaps her way of trying to add interest to these areas. Highly effective I'd say!
