Creation of the Animals

Super plywood jigsaw puzzle, cut in 1967 for the library and displaying very accurate colour line-cutting throughout the non-interlocking style of the puzzle.

This example carries cutter initials of G.A.K., its manufacture coming the year following Dolly McDougall's death in 1966. As her grandson Andrew then took over both her fretsaw and the running of the library, it seems that this may have been one of Andrew's first efforts, perhaps even having completed a puzzle which his grandmother had started, giving rise to the G.A.K. (Grandmother and Andrew Kershaw) initials. Just a theory at the moment!

The artwork is attributed to Master Bertram (1343-1415), of Minden, painted in 1380. It was one of 24 scenes painted for the altar-piece of St. Peter's Church in Hamburg, Germany. This information comes from a small folded paper sheet supplied with the puzzle and cleverly inserted into a pocket within the bag's attached luggage-style details label. Altogether a fascinating and very challenging puzzle from this puzzle lending library.
