The Philmar brand name is understood to have been established by Philip Marx c1937, with jigsaw puzzles forming a significant part of their business operations, particularly those of cardboard construction from the post WWII era. Wooden jigsaw puzzles also appear, although in lesser numbers with some, such as Head of Loch Tay, possibly being of pre-war manufacture.
They were a prolific manufacturer, issuing collections of puzzles under various series titles such as those of Cavalcade, Famous Castles, Famous Cathedrals and Olympia, to name but a few.
My own records relating to this brand are still rather within their infancy. For a far more definitive catalogue of their jigsaw puzzles, please visit the
Board Game and Jigsaw Puzzle World website.
Many thanks to David Crocker for taking up the challenge of starting to supply images and details for this prolific British manufacturer.
