New Circular Jigsaws

The first circular jigsaws ever made featuring a unique format of various scenes in a common theme laid out in sectors round the circumference. They are all inscribed 'Patent applied for, No 830942', however this is a Registered Design Number which Waddington's obtained for their circular shape rather than the layout of the pictures.

The first four, numbers 201 - 204, were brought out in 1939 and cost 1/- (5p) and another four, numbers 205-208 came later , about 1940, and cost 1/3 (6.25p).

They were packed in black and yellow boxes openable at either end and sealed with gummed paper. This design of box was not ideal as they were easily crushed after opening, the sealing flaps could become detached and pieces were often lost making complete puzzles more difficult to find.
Special thanks to Alan Sudbury, Barbara Middlestorb and Cecilie Kay for their knowledge, input and pictures from this excellent group of puzzles.
